#1 - STORY BEHIND
The Creative Direction
The project began with the idea of bringing two distinct cultural traditions into a shared visual language: Indonesian batik and the Chinese Zodiac.
Rather than treating them as separate visual elements, I explored how zodiac animals and batik-inspired motifs could be combined into cohesive patterns and illustrations. The goal was to create a visual interpretation that celebrates cultural identity while presenting it in a fresh and engaging way.
#2 - EXPLORATION
Pattern & Illustration
I explored the relationship between traditional batik motifs and the twelve Chinese Zodiac animals, translating their forms and characteristics into a distinctive visual style.
The resulting illustrations and patterns formed the foundation of the project's visual identity, connecting cultural symbolism with a more contemporary and approachable aesthetic.

From Patterns to Stories
The project expanded beyond static visuals into a children's storybook and motion graphic.
These formats allowed the visual concepts to take on a narrative dimension, using illustration and movement to make the cultural fusion more engaging and accessible to a wider audience.
Reflection
Zodiac in Batik gave me an opportunity to explore how cultural references can inspire new visual expressions. Through pattern-making, illustration, and motion, I experimented with ways to connect traditional influences with contemporary storytelling.
